Russian director of "Seventeen Moments of Spring" dies (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russian film and TV director Tatyana Lioznova, best known for her series "Seventeen Moments of Spring," died on Thursday in Moscow, state TV reported. She was 87.

The Muscovite was a darling of the Soviet film industry, directing much-loved classics such as "Three Poplars at Plyushchikha Street" and "The Carnival," which centered around life in the Russian capital.

Born to a Jewish family, her 1958 directorial debut "The Memory of the Heart" thrust her into the center of the Soviet artists' elite.

Lioznova reached the pinnacle of her fame directing "Seventeen Moments of Spring." Putin, a former KGB spy who served in Germany, has described the 1973 series featuring a Soviet agent who thwarts Nazis, as one of his favorites.

"During Soviet times, Lioznova tried to show war from a point of view that was different from the Soviet understanding," Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev told Interfax news agency, referring to the human touch she bestowed on the TV series.

"She was able to make real, eye-catching cinema," he said.

Gene Research, Banned Inhalers Change Asthma, COPD Treatment Options (ContributorNetwork)

U.S. researchers are using genetics to explain why some asthma sufferers do not respond well to steroid inhalers, the most common form of asthma treatment. Over-the-counter inhalers that use CFCs have also been banned. Here are some facts about asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and their treatment.

* More than 22 million Americans and 300 million people worldwide have asthma. Seven million (9.4 percent) of all children have asthma. Asthma is the no. 1 most common chronic childhood illness. An average of 3,447 people die from asthmatic conditions annually.

* Asthma and COPD: Symptoms are similar for both conditions. They include swollen bronchial tubes, shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. In both conditions, bronchodilators and steroid inhalers are used to reduce swelling and control symptoms.

* Differences between asthma and COPD: Though related in effect, the two conditions differ in etiology and age of onset. Asthma typically shows up in childhood or adolescence, while COPD usually occurs in adulthood. Triggers are different, too. Asthma flare-ups are caused by breathing cold air, allergens, exercise and stress. COPD, as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is usually caused by smoking, or working in environments with chemical fumes or poor ventilation. Nonsmokers who lack the Alpha-1 antitrypsin protein can also develop emphysema.

* Long-term concerns: COPD is characterized by frequent debilitating bronchial infections. It is only partially reversible with treatment and smoking cessation. Asthma, can be maintained successful with proper treatment. Asthma has a much better prognosis than COPD.

* Treatment approaches: COPD is sometimes wrongly diagnosed as asthma. Although the conditions and treatments are similar, they should not be confused. Asthma sufferers tend to respond better to inhaled corticosteroids, like Advair and Pulmicort. A bronchodilator is used only in cases where a steroid inhaler isn't enough. The opposite is true for COPD. A bronchiodilator is the first line of defense, with steroids added if needed.

* Asthma gene research: Findings show that patients with two inherited copies of a variant GLCC1 gene tend not to respond to traditional steroid inhaler treatment. This affects 40 percent of asthma sufferers. It points the way to more personalized treatment options in managing symptoms.

* OTC inhalers: Some asthma and COPD sufferers use over-the-counter epinephrine inhalers, such as Primatene Mist to manage breathing problems. After Dec. 31, those will no longer be available. The FDA began phasing out CFC-containing OTC inhalers in compliance with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Asthma and COPD patients will now have to obtain a prescription inhaler.

Bans for Columbus' Wisniewski and Wild's Staubitz

(AP) ? The NHL came down hard Monday on a pair of players for illegal hits in a game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild.

Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended for the rest of the preseason and the first eight regular-season games for a right-arm blow to the head of Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck after the horn sounded at the end of regulation in Friday's game.

Wild forward Brad Staubitz was suspended the rest of the preseason and the first three regular-season games for an illegal check from behind that sent Columbus' Cody Bass into the glass.

Wisniewski will also forfeit $536,585.36 in salary, an amount determined because he is classified as a repeat offender. Last season, while playing for the New York Islanders, he was suspended for two games because of an obscene gesture he made toward Sean Avery during a game. Two seasons ago, while playing for Anaheim, he was docked eight games for knocking Brent Seabrook out of a game.

Wisniewski, who signed a six-year, $33 million contract with the Blue Jackets on July 1, was assessed a minor penalty for his illegal hit. He will be eligible to return for Columbus' Oct. 25 game against Detroit.

"I found out about it between periods. It was a tough one to swallow," Columbus coach Scott Arniel said after the Blue Jackets' game at Washington. "Obviously, the league has a mandate, and they're trying to really set a tone here early on in the season, and it was harsh. It was very harsh.

"It was a lot harsher than I was expecting, but there's not much we can do about it. We've got to move forward ? they've made their decision. We've already put our best foot forward when it came to our side of the story, and obviously the league felt that, being a repeat offender, a blow to the head, that was the call that needed to be made."

Staubitz, who was given a major penalty and game misconduct for his check on Bass, will lose $9,324.33 in the punishments handed out by Brendan Shanahan, the league's new senior vice president of player safety.

Staubitz will be eligible to return Oct. 13 when the Wild host Edmonton.

"You've just got to be conscious all the time of what you're doing. It's tough. You've got to play hard, especially in the role that I'm in," Staubitz said Monday after practice, before the punishment was levied. "It's a narrow line."

Financial Aid Helps Native American Students Enter ... - Top Education

It seems that the world of business is finally recognizing that Native Americans are an economic force on their own. More and more programs are being created to help the country?s indigenous population obtain business degrees. Like a number of other racially-targeting programs, they usually involve a combination of altruistic organizations and profit-oriented businesses. Additionally, they?re creating grants and scholarships like these:

The Ford Motor Company Tribal Scholarship is for students studying math, science, engineering, teaching/training, environmental science and, of course, business. To qualify, an applicant must have a 3.0 GPA and be a sophomore in college. One must also have declared his or her major. It?s open to Native, Hawaiian and Alaskan Americans. If accepted, they?ll receive a 5,000 renewable scholarship.

If possible read this information with great care, the case and the techniques have lots of versions. The Morgan Stanley Tribal Scholars Program is open to students going to both tribal colleges and universities. They must also have a 3.0 GPA and can be either an undergraduate or post-graduate in some form of business or financial degree. Here, the scholarship is 2,500 a year and is also open to Native, Alaskan, and Hawaiian Americans.

How can I find the best online school for me? ? YouTube

One of the oldest of these programs is the Catching The Dream MESBEC Program (formerly known as the Native American Scholarship Fund). It?s open to students who are at least 25% Native American and are majoring in engineering, math, science, or business. Scholarships range from five hundred dollars to 5,000 per academic year and are awarded on merit and the basis of how the student will most likely improve the lives of Indian people.

Then, there is the American Indian Fellowship in Business Scholarship. This program is open to students at the junior, senior, or post-graduate level. Anyone interested has to not only provide an academic transcript, but also state reasons for pursuing higher education as well as his or her plans following the completion of a degree and any other relevant information such as activities and commitment to the community. Submitted applications must include separate essays that address community involvement, personal challenges, and business experience. The scholarship varies based on need.

For those who want to pursue their MBA or MS in some form of business, they should look at the AIGC Fellowship Program. It?s open to both graduating seniors and post-graduates in general. Last year, the AIGC distributed over 1.2 million dollars among 350 applicants, based on their financial need.

Naturally, any business student worth his or her salt will also make inquiries into federal programs such as the Pell Grant as well as state grants. Many of these programs require that Native American students also fill out a FAFSA form and apply for these basic forms of financial aid. Besides, they supplement one?s ability to pay tuition considerably.

Some students may have the high grades to qualify for a scholarship program, while others may not. In all though, these plans will help indigenous Americans all over the country, including those who are attending accredited online colleges. After all, one of the fastest ways for any minority group to be considered equal with the majority is through financial clout. With more and more Native Americans entering the business world, the greater their economic clout will become!

(AP) ? After eight months of contract-wrangling and negotiations that dragged past a strike deadline, supermarket workers in Southern California will stay on the job and shoppers won't have to rely on Whole Foods or their corner liquor store for groceries.

Members of the region's United Food and Commercial Workers voted to ratify a new contract with three major grocery chains, union local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said, averting a strike of more than 60,000 workers that could have crippled the industry and left shoppers scrambling.

United Food and Commercial Workers local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said Saturday that after two days of voting, members agreed to a deal struck Monday with Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons. Exact vote totals were not released.

"We're all very grateful to our customers for their support over this eight-month process, and are very grateful that we can continue to serve them," a tired-but-relieved Anreder said after the vote.

Union officials had urged their rank-and-file to ratify the contract, which they said addressed concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during months of negotiations.

"This package protects our members' access to affordable comprehensive health care for themselves and their families," the union said in a statement. "That was our top priority throughout the negotiating process."

The supermarkets, meanwhile, said after agreeing to the deal that it would allow them to remain competitive. Messages left for grocery representatives after the vote were not immediately returned.

Details of the agreement were made available to members for the first time as they filed into their union locals' headquarters or other voting locations to cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday.

"There was a sense of relief when people had an opportunity to really look over the new contract and see what was in it," Ralphs clerk and union member Mario Frias said.

The deal ended months of sometimes testy discussions between union officials and representatives of The Vons Cos.; Ralphs Grocery Co., a subsidiary of The Kroger Co.; and Albertsons, which is owned by Supervalu Inc.

The three-year contract affects about 62,000 workers from central California to the borders of Mexico and Arizona.

Ralphs had indicated it would initially close all 250 of its stores if there had been a strike; Albertsons had said it could shutter up to 100 locations, while Vons had said its stores would remain open.

The prospect of shuttered stores and tense picket lines brought fears of a repeat of the four-month strike in 2004 that cost the industry $2 billion and created a mess for shoppers. This time around, with unemployment at 12.1 percent in California, workers evidently feared that they would find little public sympathy if they voluntarily walked off the job.

The market chains, meanwhile, were likely reluctant to invite shutdowns and picket lines that might alienate shoppers already spending less due to the economic downturn.

Union leaders and the markets announced in July that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but remained far apart on payments to the union health care trust fund.

Union members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize their leaders to call a strike. Those leaders said they were responding to what they characterized as the chains' delaying tactics when they issued the required 72-hour notice Thursday evening to cancel the contract extension under which they had been working since March.

But after the Sunday evening deadline passed with neither a strike nor a deal, store employees returned to work. Union officials announced Monday that the tentative deal had been reached.

Less Play Time = More Troubled Kids, Experts Say (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Sept. 22 (HealthDay News) -- From hide-and-seek to tearing around the neighborhood with friends, playing is one of the hallmarks of childhood. But in this era of hyper-vigilant parenting, researchers find that children in the United States have far less time to play than kids of 50 years ago, a trend that may have serious consequences for their development and mental health.

"Into the 1950s, children were free to play a good part of their childhood. If you stayed in your house around your mom, she'd say 'go out and play.' The natural place for a kid was outside," said Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology at Boston College.

"Today, it's quite the opposite. Parents are not allowing kids the freedom to play. And even if they do, there are no other kids out there to play with, or the mother may have such restrictions on the child, such as 'you can't go out of the yard' that the kids don't want to stay out there," added Gray.

When kids are allowed to play, they make up games, negotiate rules and make sure others are playing fair. All of that helps to teach children how to make decisions, to solve problems and gain self-control. Children who have too many emotional outbursts or who insist on getting their way too often quickly learn they need to change their behavior if they want to continue to be welcomed into the group, Gray said.

Through free play, "they are acquiring the basic competencies we ultimately need to become adults," said Gray, author of two studies published recently in the American Journal of Play.

But since the mid-1950s, adults have played an increasingly larger role in their children's activities, to the detriment of their kids' mental health, Gray said. And, playing organized sports with a coach or other adult directing the activity doesn't replace "free" play that's directed by kids, he noted.

Research suggests that today's children are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, feelings of helplessness and narcissism, all of which coincides with a decrease in play and more monitoring and managing of children's activities by parents, he wrote in this special journal issue devoted to the decline in free play.

For boys, in particular, rough-and-tumble play helps teach emotional regulation, said Peter LaFreniere, a professor of developmental psychology at the University of Maine, in a separate article.

Boys learn that if they want to keep their friend, they can't let things go too far or truly hurt the other child -- a skill that helps boys grow into men who keep aggression and anger in check, LaFreniere said.

"It's better to make the mistakes when you're 4," he said. "Children learn there are consequences to their actions; they learn to regulate the aggression even in the heat of the moment."

Despite a growing chorus from experts about the importance of play for kids' mental and physical well-being, research indicates the amount of time kids are playing has declined significantly.

One survey Gray cited asked a nationally representative sample of parents to keep track of their kids' activities on a randomly selected day in 1981 and another in 1997. The researchers found that 6- to 8-year olds of 1997 played about 25 percent less than that age group in 1981.

Another study from about a decade ago asked 830 U.S. mothers to compare their children's play with their own play when they were kids. While about 70 percent of the mothers reported playing outdoors daily as children, just 31 percent said their own kids did. Mothers also said when their kids played outside, they stayed outside for less time.

If anything, that trend has accelerated in the ensuing decade, Gray said.

So what's keeping kids indoors? Fear of abduction is a big one, followed by worries about kids getting hit by cars and bullies, surveys have found.

Those fears have created legions of overprotective parents rearing "wimps" who are unable to cope with the ups and downs of life because they have no experience doing so, said Hara Estroff Marano, the New York-based author of the book A Nation of Wimps: The High Cost of Invasive Parenting.

"The home of the brave has given way to the home of the fearful, the entitled, the risk averse, and the narcissistic," Marano said. "Today's young, at least in the middle class and upper class, are psychologically fragile," Marano said in an interview published in the journal.

Hovering parents, these researchers said, also deprive their children of something else -- joy. One survey found that 89 percent of children preferred outdoor play with friends to watching TV.

"Parents have to remember that childhood is this special time. You only get it once, and you don't want to miss it," LaFreniere said. "Mixing it up with other kids in an unrestrained manner isn't just fun. It isn't a luxury. It's part of nature's plan."

The Fine Art of Juggling Business and Motherhood for Mom ...

Like every entrepreneurial mom, two of the top priorities in my life are my family and my business.

My Story. I have always been a driven person. I knew what I needed to do to earn my next promotion. I took every class and seminar that I could find to help me get ahead. When I was in my early 20s, all my colleagues were men in their 40s. If I had kept going, I would certainly have reached upper level management.

My desire and drive for status in the corporate world came to a screeching halt on a day in late 1993?the day I became Jackies Mom. That day, as all Moms understand, my priorities dramatically shifted. Life was no longer all about me. I wanted to spend as much time with her as I could. Suddenly work and school were unimportant. I began looking for opportunities to work from home or for good part-time jobs.

It is not easy to juggle business and motherhood. I do not claim to be an expert. After Jackie was born, I spent several years in the corporate world not realizing there were other opportunities for me. While I worked full-time, my constant concern was that I was missing everything while my child was in daycare for 11 hours a day. Because I know children are only little for a short time, a cloud of overwhelming sadness was constantly hanging over me. In my efforts to overcome this concern, I was fortunate along the way to find several excellent part-time jobs, and I even job-shared for a year. I have actually only worked full-time for half of my daughters 12 years. Yet it still never occurred to me that I could leave the security of a corporate job to have my own business.

Thankfully, the entrepreneurial bug bit me in late 2002. I now have my own business, and I love every minute of it. I am much happier and I am able to set my schedule around my childrens important activities and, on occasion work with them beside me. I recently sat at breakfast with Jackie and asked her when she has been happiest with my work schedule. She too was happiest when I was able to take her to school and pick her up myself and attend all her important activities.

My husband, Terry is about to begin working in my business full-time, too. While we are looking forward to being together more and working together to help build our business, this will be a major life change for us. Our son Cole (age three) is currently in daycare for three part-time days each week. Last week we discussed some of the adjustments we will need to make with Terry being home more. We made the commitment to juggle taking care of Cole and working in the business the remaining two days a week for the next two years until he starts kindergarten. We know it is best for Cole, that this time is a special time to be with him, and he is worth it.

I have learned many things as a Mom Entrepreneur, and I would like to share two of them. The Importance of Being Present. Several months ago, I had a breakfast meeting with my business partner and one of our networking organization members. The member was sharing some of the things he had learned in a workshop. I will never forget when he said, You are not listening, youve never listened, and you are not listening now Then he explained how he realized he hadnt been listening to his own daughter. I immediately understood what he was saying and my heart sank. I thought of my children. Although I had always wanted to have as much time with them as possible, I had become involved in growing my business. While juggling both work and family, I had stopped listening. I had been fooling myself and I had been very wrong. I apologized to my daughter that day. I changed immediately, including even little things. For example, while ironing on stars Jackie had earned in P.E., I took the time to talk about how she had earned the stars. I understood how much I was going to miss unless I was present all the time. Working moms often struggle with the lack of time spent with their children, but when we are present, every moment we spend with our children can be special quality time.

The Value of Teamwork. One of the most important things we can do for our families is to have open communication. I am not afraid to ask for help from my family. I try my best to communicate my upcoming schedule ahead of time. When I have a particularly hectic week, we talk about what is happening, if its temporary, acknowledge the stress it puts on all of us and handle it together. As a team, we worked out a plan for the days when I leave early to attend a breakfast meeting. When I say, I have a breakfast meeting tomorrow, everyone knows what to do. For example, my husband takes care of our son and drops him off at preschool. My family understands my commitment to them is, if at all possible, I will only attend one breakfast meeting a week. I communicate with them what is happening in the business and try to involve them in it, too. We are all in this together. As the business succeeds, we all succeed.

You can help, too. I love to help others, and as I continue my personal journey towards a more balanced life, I want to collect the experiences of other entrepreneurial moms. I am also writing a book for Mom Entrepreneurs. The comments submitted for these articles could also be featured in the book. It is my goal to share your stories so that we can all help each other to master the fine art of juggling business and motherhood.

Lung cancer linked to risk of stroke (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? People recently diagnosed with lung cancer are at higher risk of having a stroke than those without lung tumors, suggests a large new study from Taiwan.

Researchers looking at data covering more than 150,000 adults found that among those with lung cancer, 26 in every 1000 experienced a stroke each year, compared with 17 in 1000 who did not have cancer.

"This is one more telling sign of the long term risk of smoking," said Dr. Andrew Russman, a stroke specialist at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, who was not part of the study.

The Taiwanese researchers didn't factor in lifestyle issues -- such as smoking, drinking or diet -- that might influence stroke risk, explained senior author, Dr. Fung-Chang Sung of the China Medical University, to Reuters Health in an email.

Still, they report in the journal Stroke, that stroke risk was highest during the first three months after lung cancer diagnosis for men and during the first four-to-six months for women. Risk decreased in men after one year and after two years in women.

They also found that a less common type of stroke -- hemorrhagic stroke, caused by sudden bleeding into the brain -- occurred more often among the lung cancer patients than ischemic stroke, which is usually caused by a clot blocking blood flow to brain tissue.

Some evidence suggests that excessive bleeding and blood clots, both of which can be caused by tumors, as well as chemotherapy side effects, could partly explain the apparent link between cancer and stroke, researchers note.

"The most common type of lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, increases the body's propensity to form blood clots, even more so than other types of cancers," Russman told Reuters Health.

More than 52,000 people with lung cancer and more than 104,000 people without lung cancer were selected from a nationwide health insurance database.

Most of the study population were blue-collar workers such as farmers, fishermen and vendors, who tended to have high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

"There's a higher rate of high blood pressure and diabetes and pulmonary disease in patients with lung cancer," said Russman. "I think this reflects the heavy burden of smoking and smoking related risk factors in the population," he said.

According to the American Lung Association, smoking is directly responsible for approximately 90 percent of lung cancer deaths.

"In the U.S., smokers have twice the risk of having a stroke, regardless of lung cancer," said Russman.

Stroke accounted for one out of eighteen deaths in the U.S. in 2007, based on a report by the American Heart Association.

Zuck 5Hey look! It's Mark Zuckerb.. wait a second. Mark Zuckerberg opened the Facebook F8 conference keynote with some laughs this morning ? or at least, SNL's Andy Samberg dressed as Mark Zuckerberg (complete with hoodie, sandals, and slightly awkward vocal cadence) did. C2?? ?6) Today?s Poll:

In this week?s CBTV poll, we asked Americans an important question:
What insurance policies do you have in place or plan to have in place to PROTECT your assets in retirement?
A) Life insurance
B) Long-term care insurance
C) Disability insurance
D) Umbrella policy
E) None of the above

39% of you said that you have a life insurance policy in place to protect your assets in retirement. That?s a great start and will definitely help your family.? However, a life insurance policy will NOT generally PROTECT your assets while you?re living, and won?t cover the high-costs of long-term care, or replace an income due to disability. TO protect ALL of your assets in retirement, it?s important to have a VARIETY of insurance policies, including these four and possibly more. Stay tuned for my ?tip, tool and technique? portion of the show, where I?ll cover the 4 MOST important insurance policies to have in a retirement plan!

In our ?On the Street segment, we travel the country to ask Americans what they think about an important financial topic or issue. For this week?s segment, we asked people if they were worried about outliving their assets.

I?ll discuss the 4 most important insurance policies you should have in my ?tip, tool and technique? segment coming up next!
C1?? ?8) Matt?s Weekly Tip, Tool or Technique:
Side
And now for Matt?s weekly tip, tool or technique?
VOICEOVER: TODAY?S TIP, TOOL, OR TECHNIQUE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY AMERICAN EQUITY INVESTMENT LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY

Today?s tip is on protecting yourself from the ?unexpected? events in life, with appropriate insurance. In order to be an ideal ?preemptive planner,? you need to have the LUCK of the informed.? Here are 4 strategies and policies that you should consider purchasing NOW, and maintaining throughout retirement:

#1 Umbrella Liability Policy ? An umbrella policy is a type of liability insurance policy that protects your assets and future income, above and beyond the standard limits on your homeowners and auto policies. It?s designed to protect you from ?frivolous lawsuits? from anyone who makes a claim against you, for things like causing a fake injury in an auto accident, or falling in or around your home. Since these claims can, in most cases, be considerably higher than your standard coverage you have on your home and automobile, it?s in your BEST interest to add this extra layer of protection to your nest egg!

#2 Natural Disaster Insurance ? Floods, earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and tornadoes are some of the natural (or manmade) disasters that many people DON?T think of getting insurance for, until it?s too late! Natural disasters that impact your home can cost an exorbitant amount of money in your working years, but imagine how hard it would be if you were UNINSURED during retirement! Take a pre-emptive strike against these disasters and make sure your home, possessions and other assets are insured!

#3 Long Term Care Insurance ? Unfortunately, many people believe that federal programs, such as Medicare, will cover all their medical expenses as they age. However, one of the most expensive parts of medical care in retirement,? is one that is NOT covered by Medicare and most health insurance policies ? long term care.? The cost of long-term care is skyrocketing, and by purchasing a good long-term care policy now, your nest egg will be preserved against those high costs in the future!

Lawyers want to show Jackson press conference (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Lawyers for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death moved Tuesday to show jurors at the upcoming trial footage of a news conference in which the singer spoke of performing in only 10 shows during his "This Is It" concert run.

In a motion filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Conrad Murray's attorneys said they want to show the audio-visual recording of Jackson's news conference to support testimony that he was not physically capable of doing the 50 shows to which he eventually agreed.

Jackson appeared at the 02 Arena in London on March 5, 2009, to announce his widely heralded tour.

"At the press conference, Mr. Jackson informs the crowd that these 10 shows will be his `final show performances' and that this was the `final curtain call," said the document filed by defense attorney Nareg Gourjian.

"Mr. Jackson reiterates to the crowd that, `When I say this is it, it really means this is it."

In little more than three months, Jackson was dead of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol. The rehearsals for his lavishly produced concert became the basis of a posthumous concert movie, "This Is It."

The motion said jurors would be able to see Jackson's mental and physical condition. The defense suggests the star was in frail health and was stressed out by the prospect of performing in 50 shows.

They said the recorded news conference will corroborate testimony from Jackson's makeup artist, Karen Faye, that Jackson was furious when he learned he would be doing 50 shows.

"Mr. Jackson told Ms. Faye, `It wasn't supposed to be this way. This is not what it was supposed to be. Why can't I choose?'" the motion said.

Lawyers for Murray have said the insomniac Jackson was contemplating calling off the tour if he could not get sleep. Murray told police he was giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol as a sleeping aid. Jackson died of an overdose of the drug June 25, 2009, at his rented Holmby Hills mansion.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. His trial begins Friday with jury selection.

Yemeni forces open fire on protesters, 26 killed (AP)

SANAA, Yemen ? Yemeni government forces opened fire with anti-aircraft guns and automatic weapons on tens of thousands of anti-government protesters in the capital demanding ouster of their longtime ruler, killing at least 26 and wounding dozens, medical officials and witnesses said.

After nightfall, Sanaa sank into complete darkness after a sudden power outage, as protesters took control of a vital bridge, halting traffic and setting up tents. Thousands of other protesters attacked government buildings and set fires to buildings they said were used by snipers and pro-government thugs.

The attack was the deadliest in months against protesters and comes as tensions have been escalating in the long, drawn-out stalemate between the regime and the opposition. The president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, left for Saudi Arabia for treatment after being severely wounded in a June 3 attack on his palace, raising hopes for his swift removal ? but instead, he has dug in, refusing to step down.

The protest movement has stepped up demonstrations the past week, angered after Saleh deputized Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to negotiate a power-transfer deal. Many believe the move is just the latest of many delaying tactics.

At the same time, greater numbers of the powerful Republican Guards force, led by Saleh's son and heir apparent Ahmed and armed regime supporters have also been turning out in the streets in recent days, raising fears of a new bloody confrontation.

More than 100,000 protesters massed Sunday around the state radio building and government offices, witnesses said. When the crowd began to march toward the nearby Presidential Palace, security forces opened fire and shot tear gas canisters, they said. Snipers fired down at the crowd from nearby rooftops, and plainclothes Saleh supporters armed with automatic rifles, swords and batons attacked the protesters. Protesters took control of a main bridge, closed off the entrances and set fire to tents in a camp used by pro-government forces.

"This peaceful protest was confronted by heavy weapons and anti-aircraft guns," said Mohammed al-Sabri, an opposition spokesman. He vowed that the intensifying protests "will not stop and will not retreat."

At the neighborhood of al-Zubairi in the heart of Sanaa, troops opened fire at an anti-government force, the 1st Armored Division led by Maj. Gen. Ali al-Ahmar, who defected to the opposition along with his 50,000 troops several months ago.

Witnesses said al-Ahmar's forces engaged in the fighting Sunday for the first time, but Abdel-Ghani al-Shemari, spokesman for al-Ahmar division denied that and said they are "maintaining self-restraint."

Tarek Noaman, a doctor at Sanaa field hospital, said that 26 protesters were shot dead and more than 200 were wounded. "Most of the injuries are at the chest, shoulder, head and face," he said, and said 25 of injured protesters were in critical condition.

He accused security forces of preventing ambulances from evacuating the wounded and collecting bodies of the slain protesters.

A Yemeni opposition television network carried live video of men carrying injured protesters on stretchers, including a motionless man whose face was covered with blood and eyes wrapped with bandages. Other young men were lying on the floor in the chaotic field hospital. Men on motorcycles rushed the injured from the square to field hospital.

Protesters throwing stones managed to break through security force lines and advance to near the Yemeni Republican Palace at the heart of Sanaa, turning the clashes with the security forces into street battles.

The Youth Revolution committee, which leads the protests, called on Yemenis to rally "day and night and everywhere in Yemen until we topple the remnants of the regime."

The Yemeni state news agency Saba quoted a security official as saying that the Muslim Brotherhood rallied "unlicensed protests" near the university of Sanaa, and "the militia threw firebombs at a power station, setting it on fire."

Though Saleh has been in Saudi Arabia since June, he has resisted calls to resign. Last week he deputized his vice president to discuss a Gulf-mediated, U.S.-backed deal under which he would step down in return for immunity from prosecution. Saleh has already backed away three times from signing the deal.

The U.S. once saw Saleh as a key ally in the battle against the dangerous Yemen-based al-Qaida branch, which has taken over parts of southern Yemen under cover of the political turmoil in the country. The U.S. withdrew its support of Saleh as the protests gained strength.

Later Sunday, Abdullah Oubal, a leading opposition member, charged that the violence was linked to the power deal.

"This is intentional. The hawks within the ruling regime are trying to abort efforts to seal the deal," he said.

Demonstrations also took place Sunday in many other Yemeni cities, including Taiz, Saada, Ibb and Damar.
