Health and Fitness ? Important Facts About Emergency Contraception ? Health and Fitness

Millions of unintended pregnancies happen all over the world and emergency contraception are the most effective method to help, prevent it. Most women use various types of birth control methods that help prevent a pregnancy.

When these birth control methods fail, it is emergency contraception that has been found to be most effective. However it is important to remember that these methods will not be effective, if the women are already pregnant or if they are used 72 hours after unprotected sex.

There are two types of contraception available in case of emergencies and these include:

  • Emergency contraceptive pill (also known as morning after pill)
  • Intrauterine devices

It is always important that the women who intend to use any of the methods specified above, should consult the physician before doing so. It will help them deal with any kind of side effects. These contraception methods should not be continued, if the woman is already pregnant and she was unaware about it.

These are not regular birth control methods and should be used only in case of an emergency. so how does an emergency contraception work? It is similar to the birth control pills that are prescribed by your physician as they prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg. they also help prevent the sperm to fertilize the egg.

How effective are these contraception methods? The various methods that are prescribed for this purpose can be very effective, if they are taken within the prescribed time. However women who are already pregnant or those who suffer from some ailment like cancer or blood clot should avoid using these emergency methods. Intrauterine devices should not be used if you are suffering from any sexually transmitted disease.

Most women who choose any one of these methods will experience mild side effects, which would gradually disappear after a couple of days. side effects include uneasiness in the stomach, vomiting, nausea, headache or heavy bleeding between periods. If these side effects do not disappear after some days, you may have to consult a physician.

Emergency contraceptive pills are not abortion pills and it is important that you are aware of the difference between them.
